Eunice's Sofa Cover Business

Field Reflection

Eunice's Sofa Cover Business

This is Eunice.

When Eunice joined the Women Resilience Circle, she was already running a small business selling milk and groceries.

Most people would have looked at what they already had and tried to sell more of it.

Eunice did something different.

She started paying attention.

While serving customers in the market, she kept hearing the same question.

"Do you have sofa covers?"

She didn't hear it once.

She heard it often enough to wonder why people kept asking.

The answer was simple.

If they wanted sofa covers, they had to travel all the way to Narok town to buy them.

After receiving her business capital, Eunice travelled to Nairobi instead.

She bought her first stock of sofa and seat covers and brought them back to her community.

Today she sells them alongside her groceries.

She told us she now goes to the market three times each week.

Some of the people buying from her are no longer people she knows.

They are people who were sent by someone else.

She has also changed the way she sells milk.

Instead of selling to individual customers every day, she now supplies three hotels and is paid weekly.

Of all the businesses in this year's cohort, Eunice's is the one I find myself watching most closely.
