Joy's Story
To be honest, I can't say I realised how important this work was until we started doing it.
Towards the end of 2024, I already knew my assignment at my previous job was over. I didn't have any clear next plan figured out. In fact, I would spend most days in prayer just wanting to hear from God.
Most of those days, what I got was silence.
That pin-drop silence.
It left me feeling frustrated, disappointed, helpless and powerless. Looking back now, I know that season took a mental toll on my life. At the time, I didn't know what it was. Today, I can confidently say it was depression.
I was depressed.
I remember trying to think of anywhere in Narok where I could seek counselling. There was nowhere.
I sought help within my family, but they couldn't really understand what I was going through. The best they could do was pray with me, and I'm grateful they did.
There is one evening I actually felt I needed to travel to Nairobi to see a counsellor. I searched online, but the rates per hour were something else. I gave up. I didn't travel and I never reached out.
I decided to keep it to myself and pray about the situation.
Starting this programme has made me appreciate counselling, but more importantly, free access to it.
I found myself in that situation a year before WRC started. I needed counselling, but I couldn't afford it.
These days it melts my heart knowing that the mothers in our programme don't have to make that choice. They can receive counselling when they need it, and as many times as they need it.
